Meet Mrs. Leah Tovar

This is Mrs. Tovar's 5th year working at Trinity. She has worked as the Advancement & Admission Assistant and BS Aide, and currently serves as the Administrative Assistant to the Head of School. Mrs. Tovar was born and raised in Galveston and attended Trinity Episcopal School starting at age 2! Trinity holds a special place in her heart for many reasons; the traditions such as May Fête, Lessons and Carols, Medieval Days, Graduation, and the Leslie Otto Flower Show have all been sketched in her heart. Now her 4th-grade daughter is enjoying many of the same unique traditions, which are some of the main reasons why they have chosen Trinity Episcopal School as the place to educate and prepare Sofia for the next phase of her life.

Mrs. Tovar has been married for almost 11 years to her best friend and the man she adores, Frank Tovar, a USMC Veteran. They both enjoy quality family time, outdoor activities, traveling, and making lots of memories in everything they do together. Sofia was the icing on the cake for them, she has made every day a new day and they love watching her grow into such a fun and happy little girl!

Mrs. Tovar also enjoys cooking, baking, summertime pool activities, dancing, reading, and spending time with her only sister, Priscilla, and her precious family. She truly believes God placed her here back at Trinity for a reason: to help support this amazing team of people she works with and to always take care of every student as if they were her own. Thank you, Mrs. Tovar, we could not do what we do here at TES without you!

FACULTY SPOTLIGHT

Meet Mrs. Kelly Shaffner

Kelly Shaffner became an islander after graduating from Texas State University in 2007, when what was meant to be a summer away turned into a permanent move. She met and married her husband, Aaron, here on the island and they now have two daughters, Ava and Sydney, who are both Trinity Chargers as well. They love spending time as a family outdoors and are currently fully immersed in all things Harry Potter. This school year is Mrs. Shaffner's twelfth year in the classroom, seven of which have been at Trinity Episcopal School. Her teaching path began in Dickinson ISD, where she taught 4th and 5th grade for four years, followed by a year in Galveston ISD before making her way to Trinity in 2014. Over the years, Mrs. Shaffner has taught grades 2-5, and while she enjoyed them all, she recognizes fifth grade as her ideal fit. She says, "I love this age group for so many reasons, it is really a special time in these young people's lives. They are at a crossroads of sorts in that they are on the brink of starting the next chapter of their school lives (Middle School) but are still relishing in the last bit of their Lower School days. Their personalities are so funny and unique at this age and it is so fun to watch them learn and evolve!" Some of her favorite memories shared with her students over the years come from the various field trips, service projects, and hands-on learning experiences she can facilitate here at Trinity. Mrs. Shaffner also notes that among the many things she adores about our school, our special school traditions and close-knit community are most special. Thank you, Mrs. Shaffner, for all that you do for Trinity!

SECOND GRADERS EXPERIENCE SPACE TRAVEL UP CLOSE!

2nd Graders enjoyed seeing what the Galveston Causeway looks like from space and learned about Bernoulli’s principle first hand!

Second grade has spent the last few weeks learning about space! We launched our unit by watching International Space Station Space Walk, delved into an informational text, Exploring Space Travel, and learned about trailblazer Mae Jemison, the first Black woman astronaut that traveled to space. Curiosity was sparked within our students after watching the landing of Perseverance on Mars and they began to wonder, what would life be like on another planet? Each student researched a planet and then wrote an opinion piece about a planet they would want to visit.

For the culminating experience, we had a special guest speaker, Aerospace Engineer Christopher Kochling, give an awesome presentation about space! Mr. Kochling brought the International Space Station to life and connected our students’ learning by sharing detailed pictures and history of the ISS, took us on a tour of the space station, and conducted interactive science experiments with the students that made concepts relatable. A big hit was the demonstration of Bernoulli’s principle with a hair dryer and ping pong ball!

Mr. Kochling concluded the presentation with one final picture taken from space of our entire Solar System. At first glance, Earth was so tiny that the photographers believed it was a speck of dust. He emphasized, “If you want to do really cool stuff, it takes a team. The Earth is a really small place, we all have to get along and share.” A big thank you to Mr. Kochling for inspiring our students to stay curious and discover the universe! Fun Fact: Did you know Velcro was invented because of space?!

FACULTY SPOTLIGHT

Meet Mrs. Anne Charpentier

Anne Charpentier has been a faculty member at Trinity since 1989. Hired by Budgie Hollamon, whose prerequisite before continuing any interview was, “you’ve got to love children”, Mrs. Charpentier still holds that as a central value in her teaching. In her 32 years at Trinity, Mrs. Charpentier has served as teacher, parent, mentor/advisor for various extra-curricular courses and groups, Director of Admissions, and Assistant Head of School. Currently, she is teaching 6th- 8th grade Spanish. Mrs. Charpentier graduated from the Univeristy of the South at Sewanee. She also completed undergraduate work at The University of Oxford and the University of London. She has attended UHCL for graduate work in English and art.

Mrs. Charpentier’s 3 children (Drew, 25; Thomas, 23; and Jane, 17) are all (Alpha-Omega) Trinity graduates. She adores time with her family and her pastimes include art, photography, writing, reading, and swimming. This past year she has learned to present courses digitally and has enjoyed learning the art of creating educational videos. She wishes the best for each student, and as she often says, she wants for all students to enjoy learning, believe in themselves, and “have a great day!”
